The latest offering from Kodak is the new Kodak PlaySportZX3 high-definition waterproof pocket camcorder. This high-definition video camera records in 1920 X 1080p at 30 frames per second. If you are looking for spectacular high-speed and underwater video or still pictures, the Playsport ZX3 is not quite there.
The Kodak PlaySport isn't much different from other pocket camcorders in that it does produce a small amount of pixilation or digital noise in lower light settings. However, for the average consumer these specs work just fine and when combined with the impressive durability and other features the camera offers a bargain at the low price of around 150.00.
Durability
Consumers who are looking for a durable waterproof pocket camcorder will definitely find the Kodak PlaySport meets their needs. Because it is made of soft touch materials that don't get slippery when wet, this camera is easy to hold on to, in and out of the water.
It takes good quality, 5 megapixel still pictures, but does not come with a flash so lighting must be adequate. Obviously the main reason for buying a waterproof camera is so you can use it in the water. The PlaySport takes video in depths of up to 10 feet. With secure locking covers, the USB/HDMI ports, battery and memory card bays are protected against water damage but are easy to open when needed.
Designed to be able to withstand the rough and tumble excitement of fast paced sporting events as well as the typical family vacation, we found the Kodak Playsport to be an excellent choice for both. Weighing just 4.4 ounces this pocket camcorder is only slightly heavier than other models in its class, and provides more features than the super simple Flip.
Features
With more features to play with than other pocket video cameras the PlaySport gives you options you never had before. You may need to refer to the instructions to figure out some of the icons since Kodak decided not to put words next to them, but most of them are simple enough.
The brightness on the 2 inch LCD screen can be adjusted by activating the "glare shield". This option is vital outdoors if the sun is very strong and may be making it difficult to view your subject or washing out your colors.
The 4x digital zoom is also nice to have and is accessed by using the four-way controller wheel on the back of the camera. The wheel also engages the still camera mode, playback, delete and other menu choices. The white button in the center is the "record" button, be sure to press firmly since it occasionally did not respond on the first click.
In addition, we also liked the"face detection" and "electronic image stabilization". Both are valuable features for fast paced sporting events or parties when the action requires it. If you are not comfortable using different features that's fine, simply point and shoot. The camera does a great job on its own and you will still be happy with the results.
Memory and Interface
The PlaySportZX3 comes with 128 MB of internal memory which really isn't adequate, you will need to buy a SDHC card, the camera accepts up to 32GB which can give you about 10 hours of video footage. In contrast to the Flip UltraHD which is more expensive, the PlaySport comes with a HDMI cable to use if you want to watch your videos in HDTV.
Summary
With its durability and modern design, the Kodak PlaySportZX3 HD waterproof camcorder brings a lot of value to the table. With ample features and the ability to interface with HDTV this little camera will provide the user with plenty of fun and excitement! Priced affordably, and available in 3 colors, blue, black and purple there is something for everyone to like
